Most Excellent Cell Phone/Google Interactions

From Pogue today: http://tr.im/google_sms

1. Text GOOGL (46645) a query: weather cmh and it immediately spits back the 3 day forecast! I just did "hometown buffet (stop laughing you snobs) 43202" and am still waiting.

2. Call 800-GOOG-411 for information, e.g., "domino's pizza, cleveland" and you hear the closest eight matches or say "text message" and phone number zapped to you as a text.

3. Text an appointment to GVENT (48368), e.g. 3 pm dentist appt, (don't know how to put in the date, gotta try it) and it's in the calendar.

A Granville Panorama

Panorama photography (or panos) seems to be all the buzz lately. I think it's because of the depth of information that can be captured with the increased resolution and "stitching" tools available. The images, or, flash movies created from them are informative and vivid. One collection of these images is from a friend of mine and a great photographer

You can see some of his panoramic work at that link and here's an example embedded in my site (with permission). Mouse around and have fun. It's awesome.

Enjoy!

TSA, not quite as "good" as when Bush was in

This morning, I'm off to Boston on family matters without the kid and wife. Makes me a bit sad, but it's for good cause. Traveling without the kid, I decided to take some crucial things to pass time in airports. Here are my unnecessary time-wasters.

1. Twinkie, Deconstructed, I might get to finish it, I'm on the fascinating leavening chapter.

2. A downloaded copy of this week's Sound Money, the best finance show on the web.

3. A K-type thermocouple with a stainless steel probe and yellow coil of wires and the USB datalogger itself, in case I have to measure a series of temperature data between -60 and 1900°F.

4. Some software I've been meaning to install.

5. My trusty 2.0 pixel Canon A20; it is a huge 6 year old relic. I love it though.

The title of the post? See item #3? I placed this in the outermost pocket of my scanned bag. A yellow coily wire and it never raised an eyebrow. I am in awe. I still have to endure the BOS check in on the other side. Should be interesting.

Valentine's week is finally winding down

Due to large public school system class sizes, we've all been doing our share to prepare the tens of Valentine's Day cards - each with a treat attached of course.

Today, there is a friendship party at school. Preparations have been going on for a week. I feel for her teachers.

There is a list of items at home from which I can choose to get Frankie for Valentine's Day.

We have about two boxes of cards that have been made for Mom and I over the past two weeks.

She has had her special pink cammo pants ready (Thanks Aunt Karina and Uncle Karl!) for two days now getting ready to wear to the party today.

Mom decorated Frankie's face with face paint this morning; she has hearts on her cheeks but wouldn't stop moving for a picture.

Closing ceremonies are tomorrow.

Dancing Orzo (not Raisins)

Update Was a blast!! Most common question of the day: "Frankie's Dad, why are you sweating so much?"

Original Post
Until now, the only ones who could make me wear a tie were not alive.

Tomorrow, on the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth, I'll start an occasional series of science activities in Frankie's class.

28 kids, all will participate hands-on, we'll be working with a bunch of fizzy water and all in 20 minutes. Should be interesting. We'll all be making a dancing orzo installation and talking about nucleation, buoyancy and carbon dixoide. Not quite as focused as it should be, but it looks fun and I think the kiddies will like it.

One bad part. The kid instructed me to wear a tie. ugh. She even picked it for me.

Yes, I'll wear it.

Help!

What's the quickest thing I can make that emulates the rotating
platform on a little kids turntable? Need it cheap and battery
operated (electric ok too I guess). Need it for a demo.

Icy/Melty N. High

Icy/Melty N. High, originally uploaded by Seligmans Dog.

I tried to soak up some of this water with my pants this morning. There was too much. I'm wet and sore.

Cool shot though (imo).

Dear Clintonville Residents,

Please shovel your sidewalks before it goes below 10 degrees.
